How Was I Broke Earning That Much?

July 26, 20255 min read

You’re Probably Losing Money Right Now

Let’s not sugarcoat it, you’re losing money.
Not because you don’t work hard.
Not because you’re lazy.
But because YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO TRACK YOUR MONEY , and you have zero solid savings plan.

Yeah, I said it…
Yes, I mean YOU.

And trust me, I’m not here to act perfect. I’ve made dumb money mistakes too... I’ve been there. In fact, I was the CEO of that lifestyle for years.

I Don’t Even Know Where My Money Is Going

There was a time in my life when I’d look at my account and just feel confusion.
I’d be like, “Wait… how do I have N3.98 left? Didn’t I just get paid??”
Sometimes I wan craze! 😂
Spoiler: I DID know where it was going, I was just in DENIAL 💀.

I was:

  • Spending to impress people who didn’t even care.

  • Buying things I didn’t need just to feel good in the moment.

  • Saying “ YES ” to everything and everyone, especially when I couldn’t afford to.

  • Distributing salary mentally before it even landed.
(You know that “this one is for my babe [Lmao 😂], this one for data, this one for vibes” routine?)

The only thing I consistently saved for?
HOUSE RENT.
And even that used to stress me out. Like bruh… what kind of adulting is this?

That Toxic “More Money Will Come” Mindset

You know what made it worse? That small voice in my head saying:

Don’t worry, you’ll make more money next month.

LMAO 😂. Big scam.
That mindset is a trap, it’ll keep you stuck in a loop where you:

  • Never truly build anything.

  • Never plan long-term.

  • Keep living paycheck-to-paycheck no matter how much you earn.

I had to face the hard truth:
IT WASN’T ABOUT HOW MUCH I WAS MAKING. IT WAS HOW I WAS MANAGING IT.

I saw people earning less than me doing ACTUAL MEANINGFUL THINGS with their money, buying land, starting businesses, investing.
Meanwhile, I was flexing and floating like I was on a music video set with DAVIDO.
No plan. No budget. Just vibes 😂.

It Was Embarrassing… But I Needed That Wake-Up Call

I won’t lie to you, I felt shame.
How was I always working but still constantly broke?
How was I making decent money and still anxious every end of the month?
That realization slapped me hard. It wasn’t just bad luck or poor salary. IT WAS MY HABITS.

And once I admitted that, everything started shifting.

The Game Changed When I Started Tracking Everything

One simple but life-saving move:
I started tracking my spending. Every naira. Every kobo.

No more "I think I have like N50K left."
No more “This one small expense won't matter.”
I wanted clarity. I wanted control.
So I got intentional, and digital.

Now I use Auritrack.com (Designed to give you full control over your money) and Apple Note to:

  • Track where my money goes.

  • Set budgets for specific things (e.g. food, transport, emotional damage shopping 😂 ).

  • Actually pause before spending.

Since then, I haven’t become a billionaire (yet, but hopefully soon 😂), but I’ve become WISER with money.
And that’s priceless.

Some Real Lessons That Hit Me Late

If you’re in your 20s or early 30s reading this, take these seriously:

  • Don’t SPEND MONEY YOU HAVEN’T EARNED YET (mentally or physically).

  • Stop trying to PLEASE everyone. You’ll go broke, and they still WON’T clap for you.

  • More money isn’t the solution. BETTER HABITS ARE.

  • Saving is not optional, it’s OXYGEN.

  • You don’t need to “ LOOK RICH ” to build wealth. Be INVISIBLE if you have to.

I Was Just Dashing People Money for Vibes

Let me be real, this isn’t about anyone in my life right now.
This is about me , before I had boundaries. Before I learned sense.

Back then, I wasn’t even “ LENDING ” people money most times.
I WAS JUST DASHING IT. Like I was Otedola’s cousin.

Someone would complain or gist me about how tough things were, and boom, I’d send N5K, N10K, N20K, N100K , Fridge? Bought it. Blender? Bought it. Washing machine? Bought that too. Paying Of House Rent? Did that.. Monthly allowance for people like I was HR? Yup. I don’t even own a company 😂

No questions asked. No budget. No plan.
Just vibes and empathy.
Sometimes I hadn’t even sorted myself, but I was already trying to be everybody’s helper.

Looking back now, I’m like:

Who sent me?

It wasn’t GENEROSITY.
It was a mix of guilt, people-pleasing, and lack of BOUNDARIES.

And guess what? Most of them moved on with their life.
I was the one left calculating how to survive the rest of the week.
THAT THING WILL HUMBLE YOU.

Now I ask myself:

Can I genuinely afford to give this, or am I just trying to avoid looking wicked?

You’re NOT stingy for protecting your own peace.
You’re NOT wicked for saying “ NOT TODAY.”

Please, DON’T GO BROKE TRYING TO BE NICE.

Be SELFISH if it keeps you sane.
Be STINGY if it saves your future.
Don’t let anyone guilt-trip you into POVERTY.

Don’t Be That Guy (Yes, Don’t Be Like Me)

Don’t be like me, the guy who somehow spent 6-7 FIGURES IN 3 DAYS and couldn’t explain it.
Don’t wait till rent is due or emergency hits before you start changing.

Start now. Track your spending. Set small savings goals. Cut back on ego purchases.
Use tools like Auritrack.com, or even a notebook, if that’s your vibe.
Just DO SOMETHING.

You deserve peace of mind. You deserve to sleep knowing your account is not in ICU.
Your future self will thank you.

Final Thought

Sometimes, we’re (You’re) not broke.
We’re (You’re) just irresponsible.
Fix that, and watch your money start making sense.
